About Syd's Carpet & Snooze Room
Syd's Carpet & Snooze Room began as Syd's Paint Shop in 1921 by Sydney L. Lorandeau. The business was first located at 16 Crossfield Street in Keene, NH. Syd's was primarily a commercial paint contracting business, specializing in schools, hospitals, banks, churches, as well as residential homes, all over the state of New Hampshire.
Syd's wife, Helen, was the sole salesperson, bookkeeper and store operator for over 50 years. The store on Crossfield Street sold wallpaper, draperies, blinds, paint and supplies.
In 1952 Syd retired and his son-in-law, John Croteau, Sr., acquired the business. Mr. Croteau moved the business to 43 St. James Street in Keene and with Helen still working every day in the store continued to operate mainly as a paint contracting business.
In 1970 John Croteau, Jr. returned from active military duty and joined the family business. John added flooring to the line up right away and in subsequent years added furniture and bedding to the store.
Syd's has evolved through these 88 years into a 20,000 square foot facility, taking over all of St. James Street in downtown Keene. Interior design services and a large display of quality, name-brand home furnishings has been a key to the success of Syd's.
Syd's Carpet & Snooze Room, now a Flooring America store, carries brand names such as Broyhill, Norwalk, Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic.
Now in its 88th year, Syd's is fortunate to have a fourth generation son also working in the business. John the third (or Jay as he is known) works mainly in the floor covering department but fills in elsewhere as needed.
